Use of Viagra in type 2 diabetes may help to fight heart-related deaths

Sildenafil – the chemical ingredient in Viagra – is best known for its treatment of erectile dysfunction; however it may prove to be lifesaver for men with type 2 diabetes. According to a British study, people suffering from type 2 diabetes who use Viagra are likely to experience lower risk of mortality due to heart related diseases than those do not use it. This study proved to be very significant for men with type 2 diabetes as they are 50 percent more likely to suffer from heart attack compared to those who don’t suffer from type 2 disease. The same study was also reviewed online and eventually published in the esteemed official journal of the British Cardiovascular Society in an article named “Heart”. Scientists associated with the Institute of Cardiovascular Studies of the University of Manchester in England were tasked with the research on the subject.

The research also found that people who suffer from type 2 diabetes who take one of the PDE5 inhibitors like Viagra or Cialis or Levitra are more likely to survive a heart attack as these medicines help to improve blood flow. These drugs are prescribed to people who suffer from erectile dysfunction as a result of inadequate blood flow to the penis. An inadequate blood flow to the penis usually implies a problem for the heart too. Erectile dysfunction may help to diagnose cardiovascular diseases at an early stage. Type 2 diabetes patients taking sildenafil citrate can not only improve their erectile functions but also decrease the chance of a serious cardiovascular problem in future.

Diabetes has a serious impact on both the central nervous system and the vascular systems. Both of these systems have an important role in maintaining a healthy erectile function and an ideal cardiovascular well being. Early lab testing established that the cells from a weaker heart sustained longer when relieved with sildenafil citrate. The team responsible for the study is now working on yet another study intended to determine if PDE5 inhibitors can prevent irregular heart rhythms, which is the cause for the deaths of nearly half of all congestive heart failure patients.

Dr. Andrew Trafford, Ph.D. , a professor of cardiac pathophysiology at the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and a senior basic science research fellow at the British Heart Foundation said that “if clinical trials provide further evidence of a life-saving benefit, it might be possible to start treating people with this drug in the not too distant future.”

A recent research involving approximately 6,000 men suffering from type 2 diabetes studied their health and habits for nearly seven years. The test subjects included in the study varied in their ages ranging from 40 to 89 years. Out of the total 6,000 men, 1,359 men were prescribed and currently taking PDE5 inhibitors. The study determined that the men taking PDE5 inhibitors, even as occasionally as once every two months, faced a lower chance of death and risk of fatality than men who were using the Viagra, Cialis or Levitra medicines. And those taking the ED pills who faced cardiovascular disorder had a substantially higher rate of survival than those who were not taking them.

Another diabetes related research published in Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism found that the people who are at a risk of developing type 2 diabetes in the near future may be able to avert the disease by taking the PDE inhibitors. It also discovered that sildenafil citrate enhances insulin sensitivity in patients who were obese and likely to develop diabetes later in life. The study also found a relation between sildenafil citrate and a decrease of a marker closely associated with an increased risk of heart and kidney diseases.
